Chukar / Red-legged Partridge

Hardy, fast-growing game bird well-suited to dry conditions.

Overview

Chukar are hardy and fast-growing but can be prone to certain health issues if not managed well.

Chick Setup

Set up brooder 24 hours ahead. Pre-heat to 95°F. Use brooder guards. Provide adequate space to prevent piling.

Temperature

Start at 95°F (day 1). Reduce by 5°F each week until reaching 70°F.

Feed Stages

Days 1-6: Starter crumb (28-30% protein). Weeks 2-6: Grower (20-24% protein). Week 7+: Conditioner (16% protein).

Water Requirements

One drinker per 100 chicks. Keep water clean. Chukar are susceptible to wet litter — manage moisture carefully.

Lighting

24 hours light for first 3 days. Then 16 hours.

Stocking Considerations

Week 1: 0.5 sq ft per bird. Week 3: 1 sq ft per bird. Week 6: 2 sq ft per bird.

Common Behavior

Chukar are active and curious. They are generally more even-tempered than Huns.

Moving Outside

Move outside around day 42. Chukar do well in dry conditions.

Adult Bird Considerations

Adult Chukar need 10-15 sq ft per bird. They tolerate dry conditions well.
